Dr. Patel is an appointed industry leader with a philosophy of patient care that emphasizes minimally invasive, evidence-based approaches for obtaining effective, long-term relief of back and neck pain according to each patient’s individual condition and needs. As Medical Director of the Spine Health Institute and in his consecutive roles as Chairman of the North American Spine Society’s Robotics & Navigation Section, Chief of Staff at Florida Hospital Altamonte and a Global Faculty Member at the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement, he helps pave the way for the most promising new technologies in spine surgery.
A passionate researcher and clinical investigator who holds multiple patents for surgical innovation, he most recently took part in the first live clinical trial of the AQRate™ robotic assistance system in Switzerland. This system is the first robotic platform designed specifically for spine surgery, and Dr. Patel worked closely with international medical device designers to develop and improve it – with a focus on needed advancements in existing robotic technologies that would make them more adaptable to the unique intricacies of complex spine surgery.
Among other innovations, Dr. Patel was also instrumental in the design, testing and introduction of the CAPITOL™ MIS Cervico-Thoracic Stabilization System, a revolutionary approach to posterior CT fusion procedures. The tool is gaining in recognition and availability worldwide and is a subject of instructional seminars led by Dr. Patel in various medical forums.
Dr. Patel’s research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed medical journals including Spine, The Spine Journal, the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy, Seminars in Spine Surgery, and others. He most recently co-authored an authoritative overview of the use of robots in spine surgery for SpineLine, the official publication of the North American Spine Society (NASS). Dr. Patel is also a frequent invited presenter and moderator at prestigious conferences around the globe, and recently led an important panel discussion on the use of robotics in the value-based health care market at NASS’s 30th annual meeting in Chicago.
Dr. Patel earned his medical degree and completed his residency at the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his advanced spine surgery fellowship training at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. Prior to joining Florida Hospital Altamonte, Dr. Patel was the director of minimally invasive spine surgery at William Beaumont Hospital.
He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of the North American Spine Society. Dr. Patel is also currently a global faculty member of the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement for Florida Hospital Altamonte.
